How Easy Is It For A Customer To Buy?

By: Brent Albrecht

Who this is for

The owner wondering how they can generate more consistent sales.

At a glance

  • Online shoppers abandon about 70% of shopping carts, based on an average of 50 studies.1
  • 17% of US online shoppers have abandoned an order because the checkout process was too long or complicated.1
  • 67% of business-to-business buyers surveyed say they prefer to buy without talking to a sales rep.2

You’ve done the hard work: someone knows your name, likes what they see and wants to buy. Now the question is whether buying from you is as easy as deciding to.

Part 3 of Due for Service: Your Sales Engine closes the loop. Brand gets you noticed, and lead generation brings interested buyers to your door. But every extra step, form, phone call or day of waiting between “I’m interested” and “I’ve paid” is a chance for the buyer to lose momentum, get busy or call a competitor.

Walk Through It as a Customer

Most owners have never bought from their own business. Try it. Start where a new customer starts, whether that’s your website, a phone call or a request for a quote, and follow every step until the job is booked and paid for. Count the steps, the forms, the handoffs between people and the days spent waiting. Then ask which of those steps the customer actually needs, and which exist only because that’s how it has always been done.

Pay attention to where you lose people. Do inquiries go unanswered over a weekend? Does a quote take a week because only one person can price the job? Does a signed agreement wait on a deposit by check? Each delay seems small on its own. Together, they can turn a buyer who was ready to commit into one who is still thinking it over.

Three Places Sales Slip Away

Friction usually hides in one of three places. Here’s why each one matters and what it costs you.

Too many steps

Why it mattersEvery extra form, approval or back-and-forth gives a ready buyer another reason to pause.

The resultDeals that should close this week drift into next month, or quietly disappear.

Slow follow-up

Why it mattersInterest fades quickly, and a buyer who has to wait for an answer has time to ask someone else.

The resultProspects you worked hard to attract end up buying from whoever answered sooner.

Manual work that could be automated

Why it mattersQuotes typed from scratch, paper contracts and invoices that go out days later slow the customer down and tie up your team.

The resultA slower close, more errors and less time for the work that grows the business.

Make Yes the Easy Part

Look for quick wins first. Online booking, e-signatures for proposals and contracts, quote templates and online payment options are widely available, often at low cost, and can take days out of the process. Set a standard for how quickly every new inquiry gets a reply, and make sure someone owns it. Many buyers, business buyers included, would rather serve themselves, so give them clear information, package options or pricing where you can. If you sell to other businesses, make your proposal easy to pass around internally: one clear document with the scope, the price and the next step. The easier you make it to say yes, the more of your hard-won interest turns into revenue.

Revisit the process at least once a year, and ask a few recent customers what buying from you was like. They will often point out friction you stopped noticing long ago.
